From Barracks to Investments: Where Dubai’s Labour Camps Are Moving

Amid Dubai’s fast-paced construction cycle, an entire ecosystem of supporting businesses is taking shape—from building materials to the influx of labour that also needs places to live.

Today, most workers live in so-called labour camps. For years, Al Quoz was the primary cluster, but the area is steadily being repurposed for residential use.

Facts:

In 2024, 14 accommodation blocks were demolished in Al Quoz.

In 2026, a further 15 are scheduled for demolition.

Question:
Where will tens of thousands of workers move?

The answer is clear: labour camps are relocating south—to the Jebel Ali Industrial Zone, the nucleus of Dubai’s major development drive (Palm Jebel Ali and Dubai South), where the bulk of construction is now concentrated.
